CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: Ellis Moorhaven

CANON: Original Character (NOTE: Ellis and Tiberius are from the same world. They have met formally, but have no relationship beyond that, and while they know who each other are have absolutely no reason or motivation to interact due to political factors and racial tensions stemming from their world.)

CANON POINT: Approximately two months after his return from Ainmhian have passed in the Five Realms. He will return to the game from this point, with his game memories intact.

AGE: 35

HISTORY: There are mortals who live in the Five Realms among the dragonborn, humans who have never known any other life or world. There are others who have moved between worlds, learning about what lives beyond the realms of the dragon shifters to better serve those in power. Then there are those born to the world we know, the endless modern maelstrom of strife and struggle--where technology is king, and those touched by magic of any kind suffer either persecution or corruption by the power they wield.

Ellis Moorhaven was one of the latter.

Born in the United States to parents from the United Kingdom, a corner of his reality oft favored by dragons, their magic had touched his bloodline at some point, leaving him to grow up with painful hallucinations and delusions that terrified him as a child. All around him, he saw monsters walking under the masks of men, magic in the air, and found no respite in sleep as horrible nightmares would leave him waking in a cold sweat--and if he was very unlucky, coming to fruition right before his eyes.

No diagnosis ever really fit, and as he saw one psychiatrist after another, the list of diagnoses grew: schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, rapid cycling bipolar, even split personality. The medications that offered him any respite often left him nearly unconscious so the dreams could take him, and the pills that offered dreamless sleep led to more than one accidental overdose as he swallowed them without discretion, searching for an end to his suffering.

Ellis was twenty five years old when the Night Dragon came for him.

Faced with a creature whose true visage only he could see, Ellis was ready to do anything to make the pain stop. Brought to the Five Realms, he learned the truth of what he was and began his education to better understand his own nature as a Sentry. Lacking the magic of a mage to cast spells, and devoid of the controlled temperament that let clairvoyants focus their visions, Ellis was a seer whose power lay in the eye, both physical and mental. So named for their inability to be fooled, Sentries were known for vision that could pierce the veil of magic to reveal the true nature of an individual, and in sleep his mind's eye could perceive threats in order to stop them. A metaphysical watchdog of enormous brute strength, the power of Sentries was infinitely rare--and if left untrained too long, often rendered them dangerous when the power drove them to madness.

Schooled by the Night Dragon himself, Ellis learned the mechanics of his gift, and found in military training a focus for the violent impulses his power and a life of psychological torture had created. He was, however, coaxed away from the kingdom of Nocturne by emissaries of the isle of Lora. Under the king's care, Ellis began to, at long last, heal and rest. The right spells granted him restful slumber, and while magic could not rid him of his vision, extensive education allowed him to better understand what he saw and why, changing the way he saw the world: for the first time, he no longer questioned the reality he beheld.

For the first time, he was certain the things he saw were real.

Update - After his return from Ainmhian, where time had passed while not a single moment in the Five Realms had ticked by, Ellis spent roughly two weeks in the care of healers who could not explain how he had suddenly, seemingly lost control of his gifts...as though he had not used them for some time.

With regenerative sleep, counseling, and meditation, Ellis began to regain his equilibrium. Convinced his strange experience had been a delusion, he threw himself into his work as a soldier and servant of the king--but reality would turn grim as the king grew ill and, three weeks after his convalescence, King Riordan Dáiríne passed on. Seven days after the death of the king, the Reaping took place: the burial of the fallen monarch, and the rising of Lora's new queen.

With her coronation, dignitaries from across the isle, and a few sparse ambassadors of Lora's fringe allies came to welcome her--among them being the Sky Maker, king of the storm dragons. Now serving Queen Caoileann, he was the first to see a reality that would shake the kingdom to its foundation: the bond between queen and king.

Caoileann was mated to Ahkaten of the Thunder, the Sky Maker of Torrel.

Ellis will arrive about four days after her departure from the isle, traveling with the Sky Maker on an ill-advised journey to the kingdom of Nocturne for reasons Ellis was not privy to.

PAST GAME MEMORIES: Ellis will retain all memories of the events of his time in Ainmhian, such as his close relationships with Aofie Knight and Connor, as well as his friendship with Anya.

PERSONALITY: It is an unfortunate circumstance that Ellis is very much defined by the hardships of his power as a Sentry. Born a man of virtue—loyal, passionate, and with a strong moral compass—the combination of unchecked power and a lifetime under the influence of psychiatric drugs that both offered no respite, and were abused when they did, have left him a broken soul. While loyal, he often displays his steadfast heart in acts of violence when those he cares for are slighted, passion fuels rage he can't control, and that moral compass often leads him astray when he uses illicit means to see right done—most of them ending in some form of bloodshed.

Much as his perceptions are warped by the trials of his power, so is the view he presents to the world. While virtuous, long before he was broken by magic, Ellis was an impulsive individual with little regard for the opinions of those outside his limited inner circle. Magnified by his unique brand of madness, Ellis has precious little impulse control and a very limited awareness that others do have an opinion of him. The end result is a good deal of socially awkward behavior, or just engaging in plain old strange activities because a mood or idea strikes him.

Despite the hardships of being a Sentry, and the difficulties of entering an entirely different realm than the one he was raised in, Ellis is otherwise well adjusted thanks to the intervention of the Night Dragon. Overtly, he purports to loathe his sight, but on a subconscious level has very much accepted what he can do, and often gears his odd behavior towards fulfilling his purpose without being fully aware until the situation presents itself. Whether he's bird watching with a pair of binoculars on a city rooftop at night, obsessively focused on folding a piece of origami, or toys with an object to the point of dangerous distraction, more often than not those binoculars allow him to observe a dangerous vampire, the origami might serve as a distraction in a bad situation, or that object could ultimately be the weapon or talisman that protects someone at the right moment.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Ellis is a Sentry, a metaphysical watchdog and protector of the innocent of all worlds. Though blessed with an astronomical amount of magic, he has no ability to cast spells—his power lies exclusively in sight, physical and otherwise. His naked eye beholds all supernatural creatures as they are, man or monster, and he can see magic moving through the world, often like colored lengths of thread. (NERFED: Ellis will have bog standard human vision, 20/20.)

In addition, he is subject to powerful and graphic nightmares—visions of tragedy and disaster to come, wrought in vivid detail he can recall upon waking with perfect clarity to use as a tool to prevent such tragedies from happening. (NERFED: Ellis will still be subject to these nightmares, but it will not apply to game breaking or plotted events, as the magic in the realms of faerie will interfere with his powers. He will only experience them, however, when he sleeps alone, acting as an incentive to make him seek out companionship. In addition, the horror of these nightmares can be stopped by a talisman given him by the king of Lora--he will be motivated to be active so he can ask for it to ease his sleep in game.)

“What do you see?”

“I don't see nothin'.”

“You lie.”

Ellis glanced over his shoulder at the behemoth of a man standing behind him. He knew he was a man, he could hear it in his voice—even if all he saw was the sleek black scales and glowing pearl eyes of a goddamn fucking dragon standing where the man ought to be.

“It's real, Ellis. Please...tell me what you see.”

He fidgeted, unable to tear his gaze from the dragon man, scales of onyx and eyes of white, talons gleaming in the torchlight of the balcony where they stood. His fangs peeked out from beneath a leathery lip, and just the sight of him burned. It seared his retinas, scarred his brain, made him wish for some Ativan or a stiff drink or both, anything to make his brain stop working and his eyes stop seeing...

Turning back to look out over the balcony, Ellis struggled to take it all in. The sky was full of rainbows—Nocturne the land of eternal night his fucking ass, how could people sleep with all the light outside?

The thing down below, the thing the Night Dragon asked him to look at, was one of the least scary things he'd seen. He was training with a broadsword, a broad shouldered man with dark hair and fire filled eyes, bare chest and torso dusted with scales of rose gold.

“Some half dragon dude.” Ellis finally admitted, turning back to the creature behind him. “What's it to you?”

The Night Dragon smiled. His fangs were as bright as his eyes, without the shimmering cast.

“He is Black Fire...and if he can learn to serve, he will be as valuable to me as you are.”

Born in the United States to parents from the United Kingdom, a corner of his reality oft favored by the dragon shifters of the Five Realms, their magic had touched his bloodline at some point, leaving him to grow up with painful hallucinations and delusions that terrified him as a child.

Schooled by the Night Dragon himself, king of Nocturne, the most powerful of the Realms, Ellis learned the mechanics of his gift, and found in military training a focus for the violent impulses his power and a life of psychological torture had created.

Personality:

Vicious: It is an unfortunate circumstance that Ellis is very much defined by the hardships of his power as a Sentry. Despite being an otherwise virtuous man, for the most part, he has always been somewhat volatile, with a certain level of comfort with violence. The combination of unchecked power and a lifetime under the influence of psychiatric drugs that both offered no respite, and were abused when they did, have broken what control he had over his temper and darker appetites. As such, violence is his answer in most situations, in extreme degrees. Even when he means well--serving the will of his king, protecting the kingdom to which he's sworn loyalty, or righting a wrong--the execution most often results in borderline berserker level rages, and some form of excessive bloodshed.

Loyal: Ellis has had few friends in his life, and has had to rely mostly on himself to survive in a world where everyone believed he was crazy, so much so that he believed it himself. It made the few allegiances he formed all the more precious, and despite his erratic behavior, he became unquestionably reliable to those he befriended. Thus, when the Night Dragon found him and offered him respite, he accepted and permanently affixed himself to the dragon shifter's side when he made good on his word. That loyalty he later shared with the king of Lora when much the same happened: friendship was extended, and when proven, earned Ellis's fealty without question, making the isle of Lora his permanent home.

Impulsive: Long before he was broken by magic, Ellis was an impulsive individual with little regard for the opinions of those outside his limited inner circle. Magnified by his unique brand of madness, Ellis has almost no awareness that others do have an opinion of him, and precious little impulse control. The end result is that he struggles to conform to societal contracts like social lying, and lacks the restraint needed to control many of his baser urges. More often than not, if he thinks a thing or wants to do a thing, it happens before he can give the ramifications sufficient thought.

Strong moral compass: Ellis has always possessed a strong sense of right and wrong, even through the lens of his power. He has very good judgment, and while he's always very aware of the implications of his actions, his lack of self control and his skewed world view often mean that he simply doesn't care if what he's doing is wrong in the grand scheme of things.

Desperation: Though he has made some peace with his nature, it does not mean he welcomes it. Too often, the truth beneath the human veneer that he is helpless to blot out is horrifying, and he feels hunted in sleep by the nightmares his vision subjects him to. As such, he's willing to do whatever he can to escape, even for a moment, and find some measure of rest or blissful ignorance. This has resulted in battles with physical addiction, and a history of overdosing in his efforts to gain respite. Magical influences have helped restore his health some and encouraged less self destructive behavior, but in the absence of these metaphysical aids, he will not hesitate to turn to the old standbys again.

Passionate: In one of the few ways his lack of impulse control benefits him, Ellis is voraciously enamored with the things that he likes or loves, and isn't remotely self conscious about making it known or diving headfirst into the things that give him pleasure. He has no concept of hoarding his joys, either, and is incredibly generous about sharing these things with others--sometimes, whether they like it or not.

Proud: Ellis is reluctant to ask for help when needed, and despite his poor coping mechanisms would rather rely on himself than others in his weaker moments.

Resourceful: Highly intelligent and creative minded, neither are things that have been nurtured in his rough life, and as such he's not fully aware of them. This only serves to make his behavior more odd, as his adaptability functions more on a subconscious level. This creates odd behaviors like hoarding strange objects he will need later, hypersensitivity to sound that lets him evade detection in a crisis, or asking peculiar questions to assess a situation he can only barely see. On the other side, he will also rely on his own peculiarities to give him greater freedom to act when he's consciously planing something. A common example would be bird watching in the middle of the night to canvas a location or spy on someone, or using inappropriate physical contact in a moment of rage or enthusiasm to pick someone's pocket.

Powers and Abilities: Ellis is a Sentry, a metaphysical watchdog and protector of the innocent of all worlds. Though blessed with an astronomical amount of magic, he has no ability to cast spells—his power lies exclusively in sight, physical and otherwise. His naked eye beholds all supernatural creatures as they are, man or monster, and he can see magic moving through the world, often like colored lengths of thread. (Please note Ellis has a permissions post here with an option to prevent him from seeing anyone that does not want to have their nature exposed, and avoid anything smacking of god or info modding.)

In addition, he is subject to powerful and graphic nightmares—visions of tragedy and disaster to come, wrought in vivid detail he can recall upon waking with perfect clarity to use as a tool to prevent such tragedies from happening. (NERFED: This ability will experience "interference" in game, and not apply to anything put forth by the mods so as not to be game breaking, and permission will be obtained from players before he foresees any events involving player plots. Who knows, said ability might be able to help further one! :P)

Inventory: Eye of the Ember (heavy black stone resembling obsidian, save that it has a flickering glow within), small dagger, an enchanted necklace that aids him in achieving dreamless sleep (silver chain and pendant holding a small glass orb containing what appears to be a perfectly preserved petal of some deep scarlet flower)

IC

Hugging this character: Yes, but he'll look at you funny.
Kissing this character: Yes, but he'll look at you very funny.
Flirting with this character: Yes, but bear in mind Ellis is unstable and can take some things very literally. Don't invite him back to your room to check out your etchings, HE WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THOSE ETCHINGS MAN. :P
Fighting with this character: Absolutely, please note that Ellis has had military training.
Injuring this character: Of course! Just ask if it's more than a moderate injury, and note that Ellis has a high tolerance for pain. Sometimes he even likes it.
Killing this character: Ask first. I'll probably say yes, but it's not fun if you can't plot for maximum suffering.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Sure! Note for Ainmhian: But please ask first, as Ellis's power set may affect what your character can do when he regains his abilities.
Anything else: Ellis is a Sentry, a supernatural watchdog. He has the ability to see magic as a tangible thing in the air (often colored threads) as well as the true nature of supernatural creatures. For example, if your muse is a werewolf, he will not be able to see your muse's human face: he will see a wolfman walking around. If your character is a supernatural creature, please feel free to let me know in the comments below what they are, and what Ellis might see instead of a normal person! For obvious things, feel free to let me know what an alternate form for your muse might look like. Need Ellis to NOT see the true nature of your muse? Also let me know! I will absolutely work to write around it so no fun is spoiled. :P

Warnings: Mental illness, drug use, minor suicidal ideation, and extreme violence are large parts of Ellis's history. Please let me know if this is an issue, and I will be mindful when I tag you.

“He is Black Fire...and if he can learn to serve, he will be as valuable to me as you are.”

[When the network comes to life, there's a man with shaggy red-gold hair hanging in wild looking blue eyes, gleaming with a light one could call feral as he tapped the glass on the front of his tome.]

Yullo?...hey! Hey, who's in there!

[He taps it a few more times, then sighs and holds the book up more normally, mouth set in a disdainful line.]

Eh, whatever—so I need to get real drunk real—no, no that ain't right...

[He's mumbling, audibly, but clearly to himself because he's looking off to the side, raking a hand back through his hair.],/small>

…now how ya start, that ain't now—okay. Got it.

[Looking up, he tries again.]

Ellis Moorhaven, how you doin'? So I need to get real drunk real fast, where can I go? Bonus points if they got pool. I got this itch to do some trick shots...or bust someone in the face.

[He appears to ponder that for a long moment, then nods.]

Yeah, that works, too.

ANYTHING ELSE? Not that I can think of!
